Hello
Cathy and her husband Kurt, have dreamed of opening a pottery studio for years. In the summer of 2021 they picked up their belongings, sold their city house, and moved to a property that enabled them to make their dreams happen.
While Kurt is the structural visionary, Cathy is main instructor of Buck Creek Pottery. She has 32 years experience of working in clay. In 1997 she received a Bachelor in Fine Art and a Bachelor of Art Education from IUPUI Herron School of Art and Design and Master's in Art with a concentration in Ceramics from the University of Indianapolis in 2006. Cathy continues to show her ceramic work in formal gallery settings as well sell her pottery and sculpture in arts and crafts fairs. Cathy teaches high school art at Pike High School and has taught adult pottery classes for close to 20 years.
My story, my work, and Buck Creek Pottery
Cathy's Work and Inspirations:
I strive to be honest with who I am, what I love and where I came from and reveal these traits in my work. I use colors and textures that are associated with both human garments and the garments of nature - flowers, grass, moss, bark and other like exteriors. My ceramic surfaces are ones that convey personal connection with whom I am - a woman, artist, mother and outdoor enthusiast. They communicate my deep love and respect for the natural environment.

My Education and Experience in the Ceramic Arts:
I started my journey in high school and then moved on to receive a BFA and BAE at Herron School of Art at IUPUI. As an undergrad I mainly focused on low fire hand-built sculpture. My sculptures were characterized as high relief wall hangings. While focusing on hand-built ceramics, I also loved to work on the pottery wheel. I learned how to throw on the potter's wheel in high school, but continued to build on those skills in college and beyond.

After undergraduate school life, kids, family, and work took a hold and I had to take a break from clay for a few years before moving on to receive a Master's degree in art at the University of Indianapolis. There I continued to work in low-fire earthenware sculpture, but my work moved from the walls to both the outdoors and stackable freestanding sculpture.
Currently I continue to work in clay and teach adult classes. My personal work is both hand-built and wheel thrown functional pottery. I also continue to explore sculpture.

Buck Creek Pottery:
Kurt and Cathy are so excited about opening Buck Creek Pottery and building a community of friends who share a similar passion for working in clay. Buck Creek Pottery's mission is to provide a physical space and emotional atmosphere for people to come and enjoy the process of creating, exploring, learning, and manipulating clay!
Buck Creek Pottery sits on 3.5 acres. Their pottery studio will also focus on atmosphere firing. They have two electric kilns and a Raku kiln. Their short term goals include making a pit for pit firing and building a wood firing kiln.
